Is It Just A Treat Or A Chocolate Addiction?

Is that tiny candy bar you sneak every day a sign that you are plagued with a chocolate addiction? Do your monthly cravings for something chocolaty smooth and delicious mean you're an addict? Is there even such a thing as chocolate addiction? Technically, the answer to all three is no, but that doesn't mean you are free and clear. A chocolate obsession can be pretty unhealthy if it becomes a permanent and major part of your life.

Most experts agree that there is no such thing as a true chocolate addiction, so all of you chocoholics out there can breath a little easier. It is generally thought that the desire for chocolate is just that - a physical yearning to take part in something delicious that makes you feel pretty darn good. There is no scientific proof that a person can become physically addicted to chocolate, but it is a well-known fact that people - usually women - can be prone to some serious chocolate cravings.

Because chocolate is so good, but at the same time so bad, it has developed a sort of forbidden quality. This makes chocolate a prime candidate for a secret rendezvous. It also makes chocolate seem desirable because it has that "bad boy" reputation that girls love but are warned to stay away from.

That is why chocolate cravings can sometimes be viewed as addictive behavior. Even though the person knows they shouldn't have it, they just can't stop themselves from taking a little bite. And even though chocolate does have some addictive properties, chocolate addicts do not display any of the worst characteristics of those addicted to drugs and alcohol:

• total disruption of normal life patterns
• interference with family and other personal relationships
• poor performance on the job, or failing to show up altogether
• inability to stop consuming the addictive substance - at all costs.

While chocolate is a total treat for the senses and can be a mood-altering substance, a person's perceived need for chocolate can be controlled. Chocolate is the ultimate comfort food, so it is not odd that people crave it. Chocolate makes you feel good!

If you are concerned about serious chocolate cravings that reach addictive proportions at times, here are a few simple steps you can take to curb that crave:

1. Determine the true source of your craving, and if it is your emotions that are crying out for a chocolate fix, try to address the root of the problem. Most likely, it is not really chocolate that you are truly looking for.
2. Don't totally restrict yourself from chocolate. Treat yourself in moderation. This will make chocolate appear less forbidden and therefore less tempting.
3. Distract yourself by doing something else when the cravings hit, like taking a walk or phoning a friend.
4. Keep healthful snacks on hand that will give you the same sweetness that you crave.
5. Eat regular, balanced meals and don't allow yourself to get hungry.
6. Don't keep chocolate around the house.
